Partners with a Purpose
Each year, Influential Women of Northwest Indiana donates to local nonprofits that have a need for funding to complete important projects. This year, we selected four very deserving organizations that impact our community in a variety of positive ways.
Discoveries Unlimited
Discoveries Unlimited is a nonprofit organization in Northwest Indiana created to help pre- and early teens discover and further interest in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, and/or Math (S.T.E.M.). By forming mentoring relationships with S.T.E.M. professionals, the youth explore career opportunities and their educational requirements. To learn more visit www.discoveriesunlimited.org.
Food Bank of NWI
The Food Bank of Northwest Indiana acquires, stores and distributes more than 4.9 million pounds of food throughout Lake and Porter counties. It is a USDA-approved primary distributor of food to local pantries, shelters, day care centers and soup kitchens. To learn more, visit www.foodbanknwi.org.
Sojourner Truth House
Sojourner Truth House (STH) is a community resource and day center for homeless and at-risk women and children. It was founded to meet the needs of the underserved in Gary and Lake County. For more information, visit www.sojournertruthhouse.org.
The Caring Place
The Caring Place is a non-profit social service organization serving the needs of domestic violence and sexual assault victims, primarily in Lake, Porter and Starke counties. In addition to safe shelter, The Caring Place provides community education, support groups, legal counseling and case management, independent living planning. Past projects that have received funding from Influential Women of Northwest Indiana include providing child care and housing to women who are victims of domestic violence, offering nutrition classes and tutoring young girls to break the cycle of generational poverty, and offering summer camp programs to boost self-esteem.
